NJOBVU VILLAGE CULTURAL LODGE, MALAWI

Njobvu Village Cultural Lodge is a truly unique experience of Malawian culture for the visitor, located in Ligwangwa village 3km from Malawi's treasure, Liwonde National Park across the Shire River from Mvuu Camp. The program is flexible to suit all visitors, who can choose to spend an afternoon or overnight in the village. Visitors enjoy traditional dances and drumming, and may choose to walk through the village to meet the Village Headman and traditional healer. This is a unique opportunity to take part in village life, learning to prepare maize flour, cooking “nsima”, and experience an evening in a typical mud brick hut. Accommodation is available for 4 guests in 2 rooms with comfortable beds and mosquito nets. Guests will find a well-constructed long drop toilet with traditional washing area.

Njobvu Village Cultural Lodge was conceived in 2000, through the collaborative effort of nine village natural resource committees, Central African Wilderness Safaris, the Department of National Parks and the United States Peace Corps, to promote community development. Through this project, villages benefit from tourism to the national park and proceeds directly improve orphan care, local schools, clinics and bridges. This important source of revenue reduces the need to poach within Liwonde National Park, which encourages communities to conserve and protect this valuable natural resource.

Visitors may reach Njobvu Village Cultural Lodge through Ulongwe, which is located south of Lake Malombe on the road between Mangochi and Liwonde. From Ulongwe bicycle taxi will transport visitors 11km east to Ligwangwa village, which is also accessible by vehicle during the dry season (April-November). Taxis are also available from Mvuu Camp in Liwonde National Park 3km away.
